Millsboro, Del.: The mercury fell to 17 degrees below zero, the coldest temperature on record in the state of Delaware.

Portland, Maine: The snow depth stood at 55 inches, the greatest snow depth on record (also 55 inches on the ground the previous day).


1936

Laredo, Texas: The temperature soared to 98 degrees, the hottest on record in the United States during the month of January.


1950

Colorado.: A wildfire raced toward the town of Fountain, destroying 92 Army buildings and damaging 117 others at Camp Carson. Eight firefighters were killed battling the blaze, and 20 others were injured.


1970

Oregon: An ice storm caused $6 million in damage to orchards. Ice accumulated as much as 1.50 inches.
